Global Assets Founder Shifts Focus

Latest Report

This year’s Alternative Fixed Income report from HedgeNordic explores how institutional investors and asset managers are navigating this new reality, balancing yield and resilience amid shifting credit cycles, structural change, and evolving sources of return.

Stockholm (HedgeNordic) – Lars Semb Maalen-Johansen, the responsible fund manager of Global Assets Dynamic under the umbrella of Global Assets, is bidding farewell to the firm he co-founded. He is set to assume the role of Renewable Energy Portfolio Manager at sustainability solutions provider Ecohz in 2024. After eight years with Global Assets, Maalen-Johansen is shifting his focus to renewable energy and the EU’s financial instruments for achieving Net Zero, such as carbon credits and energy attribute certificates.

“After eight years with Global Assets, I am leaving the financial services industry. I am leaving a company I built up with great partners and investors,” announces Maalen-Johansen. “Tore Bergan and I started with two empty hands and great help from our first investor Peder Rinde,” he continues. “I am leaving my baby, but it’s in great hands with Tore and the rest of the team. It is sad to leave, but also the right time.”

The Norwegian boutique investment firm Global Assets launched Global Assets Dynamic in late September of 2022. Under the guidance of Lars Semb Maalen-Johansen, Global Assets Dynamic has implemented a quantitative equity strategy that combines VIX-based products to mitigate portfolio downside risk. The fund integrates a quant-driven long-only equity strategy and a continuous but dynamic exposure to VIX futures designed to protect against sharp market drawdowns.

After eight years at Global Assets, “I am moving into renewable energy and I am super excited to be a new Renewable Energy Portfolio Manager for Ecohz in 2024 and onwards,” says Maalen-Johansen. Ecohz, which is majority-owned by Petter Stordalen’s Strawberry, supplies renewable energy to electricity providers, businesses, and organizations. The company also lists three power producers, Hitec, Vision, and Ove Gusevik, as co-owners.

“I have seen the increased focus on ESG and renewable energy from the financial services industry and I can’t wait to be a part of the sector and be a part of molding the future.”

“I have seen the increased focus on ESG and renewable energy from the financial services industry and I can’t wait to be a part of the sector and be a part of molding the future,” Maalen-Johansen comments on his new role. “Ecohz has during the past 20 years helped companies simplify the path to net zero and helped create liquidity in an exciting market,” he elaborates. Ecohz is simplifying the path to net zero by tailoring sustainability solutions, offering tools such as energy attribute certificates, carbon credits and documented biogas.
