Stockholm (HedgeNordic.com) – John A. Paulson, den amerikanska hedgefondmiljardären, äger redan tre stycken pianon från Steinway & Sons: medium-modellen M grand, den större modell O och den över två meter långa modell B, tillsammans värda många tiotusentals USD.

Men John A. Paulson ville, på investerarspråk, öka sin exponering. I mitten av augusti skrev hans fondbolag, Paulson & Company, under en överenskommelse om att köpa företaget bakom pianotillverkningen, Steinway Musical Instruments, för USD 512 miljoner. Det rapporterar Dealbook/New York Times.

Det draget fick det att höjas på en del ögonbryn inom både musikvärlden och på Wall Street. John A. Paulson tjänade flera miljarder USD under åren kring Lehman-kraschen på bland annat att blanka, som det visade sig, övervärderade bostadsobligationer i spåren av Sub-prime. Men även om Paulson & Company äger stora andelar i många bolag, har de aldrig tidigare gjort ett utköp från börsen. Men John Paulson säger att kalkylen var tämligen enkel – han älskar deras pianon.

Det gick dock inte helt smärtfritt, en budstrid bröt ut om Steinway bakom ridån i juli, då private equity-firman Kohlberg & Company först meddelade att man hade nått en överenskommelse om att förvärva bolaget för 35 USD per aktie. Efter ytterligare turer i budprocessen, där fler budgivare dök upp, annonserades att Paulson gått vinnande ur striden efter att ha höjt budet till 40 USD per aktie, motsvarande USD 512 miljoner.

“Vi har i detta fall turen att John personligen är en stor beundrare”, säger Michael T. Sweeney, Steinways ordförande och VD. “Hans kärlek till instrumentet ger honom insikten om hur vi kan utveckla affären.”
