Om alla Sveriges flexifuelbilar konsekvent tankats med E85 hade de svenska utsläppen av koldioxid varit 270.000 ton lägre de senaste åren jämfört med de verkliga utsläppen. Enbart under 2010 hade utsläppen varit 188.000 ton lägre; utsläppen från transportsektorn skulle ha minskat under året istället för att öka! Det hade också lönat sig för bilisterna, eftersom E85 var billigare än bensin under större delen av året. Det visar en analys som Svebio gjort.

Sverige har gjort en unik satsning på flexifuelbilar som kan köras på etanol. Totalt såldes 207.000 flexifuelbilar från januari 2005 till december 2010. Samtidigt byggdes nätet för E85-pumpar ut till 1700 stationer, mer än hälften av landets alla mackar.

Svebio har jämfört den verkliga försäljningen av E85 med den möjliga försäljningen om alla bilarna hade körts på E85. Undersökningen visar att det uppstått ett ökande gap mellan verklig och möjlig E85-försäljning. Gapet kan inte förklaras med ekonomiska faktorer, eftersom det mestadels lönat sig för den enskilde bilisten att köra på E85 (se Svebios rapport E85 lönar sig). Sannolikt beror den växande ”underskottstankningen” och de onödiga koldioxidutsläppen på den kampanj som sedan några år drivs mot etanolen, skriver Svebio i sin rapport.
