After spending the past decade at some of Sweden’s largest systematic asset managers, most recently at Lynx Asset Management, Mattias Sundbom has now moved to the institutional investor side. Sundbom has joined the Third Swedish National Pension Fund (AP3) as Head of Portfolio Strategy and Sustainability, in a move that aligns with CIO Jonas Thulin’s vision of running both strategic and tactical portfolio decisions in a “very strict, systematic and methodical manner.”
“In March, we warmly welcome Mattias Sundbom – the new Head of Portfolio Strategy and Sustainability – to AP3,” the pension fund announced on LinkedIn. Thulin, CIO and Head of Asset Management at AP3, also welcomed the appointment, saying: “We are excited to have Mattias Sundbom joining us as Head of Portfolio Strategy and Sustainability. Warmest welcome!”

Jonas Thulin, CIO and Head of Asset Management at AP3
Sundbom brings more than two decades of experience in capital markets. He joins AP3 from Lynx Asset Management, where he spent the past four and a half years as Portfolio Manager and Head of Macro Model Research. Prior to that, he worked for about three years at the now-closed multi-billion-dollar systematic asset manager IPM Informed Portfolio Management. Earlier in his career, Sundbom also spent another stint at Lynx as a Senior Quantitative Researcher. He previously served for nearly a decade as Chief Quantitative Strategist at SEB and spent almost six years at Moore Capital Management in London.
Given Sundbom’s background, largely rooted in systematic macro and quantitative research, his appointment is likely to support Thulin’s efforts to further develop a data-driven and systematic approach to tactical asset allocation at AP3. Known for his tactically oriented asset allocation style, shaped during his tenure as Head of Asset Management at Erik Penser Bank and Head of Asset Allocation at Nordea Wealth Management, Thulin has been working to integrate and further develop this tactical mindset into AP3’s portfolio framework.
