Ålder viktigare än storlek för hedgefonder

Stockholm (Hedgenordic.com) – Ålder framstår som en viktigare faktor än storlek för den relativa avkastningen bland hedgefonder, enligt en rapport från eVestment.

Rapporten, ”Impact of Size and Age on Hedge Fund Performance: 2003 – 2013”, som citeras av Hedgeweek, säger att hedgefondindustrin håller på att mogna och sammansättningen utvecklas i takt med att institutionella investerare har blivit de dominerande aktörerna inom investerarkollektivet.

Den procentuella andelen stora fonder äldre än fem år är på en högsta nivå och nya fonder är både större vid lansering och växer snabbare. Andelen medelstora fonder under två års ålder har ökat från ungefär 5-6% före finanskrisen, till närmare 20% under 2013.

Trots att små fonder skapade en överavkastning under analysperioden, kom den största delen av denna under ett specifikt tidsintervall (2003 och 2008) och från det minsta segmentet, mätt som tillgångar under förvaltning, vilket är en indikation på att det i praktiken skulle vara svårt att replikera dessa resultat.

Under de fem åren efter finanskrisen har små fonder överavkastat sina konkurrenter inom medelstora och stora fonder vid endast två tillfällen och gått likvärdigt med båda kategorierna, ackumulerat.

Ålder framstår som en viktigare faktor för den relativa avkastningen, än storlek. Ett index skapat av fonder med mindre än två års historik (årligen rebalanserat) överavkastade medelålders (två till fem år) och mogna (över fem år) fonder under varje år från 2003 till och med 2013.
