Knepigt augusti för många hedgefonder

Stockholm (HedgeFonder.nu) – När slutgiltiga siffror fortfarande inte har kommit in så indikerar första estimaten och beräkningarna att augusti 2011 kan ha varit den tuffaste månaden för hedgefonder sedan Lehmankollapsen hösten 2008.

HFRI menar att då den genomsnittliga hedgefonder är ner 4,1 % så har vi bara tre gånger tidigare i historien haft sämre avkastning. Och det är mycket möjligt att det är några av de största namnen som blött mest. Highbridge capital, som ägs av JPMorgan, såg sin long short aktiefond backa 9,2 % när halva månaden gått. Pershing Square, aktivist hedgefonden som drivs av Bill Ackman såg sitt flagskepp, på 5,5 miljarder USD, backa 6,7 % rapporterar Financial Times.

Bland de framträdande förlorarna kan man hitta 36 miljardersförvaltaren Paulson&Co. Enligt Bloomberg så säger investerare att flagskeppet Advantage Plus hade backat 14 % den 19e augusti vilket tog ner årsresultat till – 39 %. 55 årige Paulson blev känd utanför branschen efter att han spekulerat i att den amerikanska sub primemarknaden skulle falla. Bloomberg citerar en rapport till SEC från den 15e augusti som visar att Paulson sålde 7,8 miljoner aktier i Citigroup och 63,2 miljoner aktier i Bank of America. Fonden har fortfarande 33,5 miljoner aktier i Citigroup och 60,4 miljoner aktier i Bank of America efter transaktionen. Paulsons investering i världens största guld ETF som backas av Bullion, SPDR Gold Trust, förblev oförändrad på 31,5 miljoner aktier per sista juni. Aktierna användas för fondernas gulddenominerade aktieklasser.
