Stock-picking boutique Protean Funds is strengthening its investment team with the appointment of Carl Deijenberg, an equity research analyst from DNB Carnegie. Deijenberg will join the Stockholm-based boutique as Senior Analyst in early 2027, with a primary focus on its long/short strategies.
Deijenberg joins Protean after six years at Carnegie Investment Bank, now DNB Carnegie, where he has been covering Nordic capital goods and consumer discretionary companies. He began his career at Carnegie after completing a bachelor’s degree in International Economics and Finance at Università Bocconi in Milan, having previously completed two three-month internships at the bank during his studies. “We are strengthening the investment organization with the addition of Carl Deijenberg. Carl has for the past six years been a highly appreciated analyst of cyclical and consumer companies at DNB Carnegie,” Protean Funds said in announcing the appointment.

Deijenberg will primarily focus on the boutique’s long/short strategies, which are offered through both the Protean Select fund and institutional separately managed accounts. In his role as Senior Analyst, he will support the team with idea generation, analysis and coverage.
Protean Select, the firm’s opportunistic long/short equity fund, is currently closed to new subscriptions after reaching its SEK 1 billion capacity, as strong demand has also led to significant capital being allocated through institutional mandates. Protean Funds currently manages around $1 billion across its focused range of funds, including Protean Select, Protean Small Cap, Protean Aktiesparfond Norden and Protean Aktiesparfond Global, alongside institutional managed accounts.
Protean’s long/short approach is opportunistic, long-biased and sector-agnostic, combining a portfolio of fundamental long positions with selective short positions and shorter-term opportunities where the team sees an attractive risk/reward profile. The strategy is centered on bottom-up stock selection, with the investment team seeking to identify mispriced companies through detailed fundamental analysis. Deijenberg’s background in equity research will add further analytical capacity to this process as Protean expands its investment team supporting the strategy across both the fund and its institutional mandates.
