Colosseum Turns Corner as Douglas Swedberg Joins as Portfolio Manager

After two difficult months in April and May, hedge fund Colosseum Global Alpha has regained momentum over the summer, posting three consecutive positive months. The turnaround comes as the fund adds Douglas Swedberg as portfolio manager alongside Oleg Sutjagin. Swedberg joins the strategy following a period working closely with Sutjagin as an investment analyst and trader, soon after co-founder and former co-portfolio manager Eric Andersson left the firm in May.

Swedberg brings a background in research and active trading, with a particular focus on digital assets and derivatives. He has already worked closely with Sutjagin since June 2024 as an investment analyst and trader at Sutjagin’s holding company, making the move into the portfolio management role at Colosseum Global Alpha a natural progression. “Douglas has been working with me in my holding company since June 2024, so he was a natural choice,” says Sutjagin. “He is exceptionally talented and shares the ethos of CGA: that high portfolio activity, when executed meticulously, can significantly improve risk-adjusted performance.”

Sutjagin also highlights Swedberg’s approach to risk and derivatives as an important addition to the strategy. “He is disciplined, unemotional and has a deep understanding of derivatives, and importantly, how they can be used to reduce overall portfolio risk rather than simply add exposure,” he says.

“It feels like the trend is turning, with the past three months marking the best three-month period in our short history. That gives us confidence, and we’re more excited than ever about what lies ahead.”

Colosseum Global Alpha seeks to capture short-term pricing dislocations in individual equities through a long/short strategy. Its first year was marked by significant volatility, with the fund ending its inaugural year down 30 percent. The second year has so far presented a different picture, with three consecutive months of positive performance. “It feels like the trend is turning, with the past three months marking the best three-month period in our short history,” says Sutjagin. “That gives us confidence, and we’re more excited than ever about what lies ahead.”

The recent improvement also reflects changes made to the strategy since its launch. Sutjagin says the fund is entering its second year with a more developed investment toolkit, with Swedberg playing a key role in that evolution. “There’s a reason year two, which began in July 2026, has started differently from the first,” adds Sutjagin. “We have a broader and more sophisticated set of tools at our disposal today than we did a year ago, and Douglas is an important part of that evolution.”
