Norwegian Hedge Funds Double Assets Since 2020

The Norwegian hedge fund industry has emerged as the standout performer in the Nordic region in recent years, translating strong returns into rapid asset growth. According to the Norwegian Financial Supervisory Authority (Finanstilsynet), the industry managed €7.1 billion in assets at the end of 2025, up from €6.1 billion a year earlier and more than double the €3.1 billion overseen at the end of 2020.

The industry’s expansion has accelerated steadily over the past five years. Assets under management remained broadly unchanged at around €3.2 billion at the end of both 2019 and 2020 before rising to approximately €4.3-4.6 billion between 2021 and 2023. Assets then jumped to €6.1 billion at the end of 2024 and increased by another €1 billion to reach €7.1 billion by the close of 2025.

Licensed AIFMs (konsesjon) manage assets above the AIFMD thresholds and must obtain a full license from Finanstilsynet, while smaller registered AIFMs operate under a simplified regulatory regime, and spesialfond are flexible non-UCITS investment funds subject to both securities fund and AIF regulations, with additional investor protection requirements when marketed to retail investors. Source: Finanstilsynet.

Strong investment performance has been a major contributor to this growth. According to the Nordic Hedge Index, Norwegian hedge funds generated an average return of 13.5 percent in 2025, following gains of 15.6 percent in 2024 and 10.9 percent in 2023 after a largely flat 2022. Over the three years through the end of 2025, the Norwegian hedge fund industry delivered an annualized return of 13.3 percent, comfortably outperforming its Nordic peers. Danish hedge funds returned an annualized 10.1 percent over the same period, while Finnish and Swedish hedge funds generated 5.9 percent and 4.8 percent, respectively. The industry has also carried its momentum into 2026, advancing 5.1 percent during the first six months of the year, once again leading the Nordic region.

According to the Norwegian Financial Supervisory Authority, Norway is home to 35 hedge funds. The industry is heavily concentrated in equity strategies, with long-biased equity funds accounting for the majority of managers, followed by equity long-short and credit long-short strategies. While the market also includes funds pursuing equity special situations, macro, managed futures, equity market neutral, and fixed-income arbitrage strategies, approximately 85 percent of industry assets are invested in long-biased equity funds.

With €1.16 billion in assets under management, Pareto Total is the largest Norwegian hedge fund included in the Nordic Hedge Index and is one of the country’s largest hedge funds based on Finanstilsynet’s data.
